Show and Tell Monday- My New Year

My son is beginning 1st grade today. My how time flies. I know I am a bit sappy, but I look at him and I still see my little boy. If I am this bad now, I am in trouble when he is off to college. LOL. Ah. . but it's all about watching them soar, nothing feels better than that!

I love this time of year. There is always a feeling that anything is possible, to me it's my new year, my clean slate. What time of year is it you ask? Well, it's the beginning of a new school year. I guess it is the mother/student/teacher in me that loves the first day of school. It's funny, you can take the teacher out of the classroom but you can't take the classroom out of the teacher. This will begin my 4th year since I left teaching to be home with my children. I still think in terms of "school years." I often schedule my day in terms of school hours. I often wonder if that will ever change. There are times when I run into former students, now in college and I hear "Hey, Mrs. G!" I love where I am and what I am doing, but there is a little bit of me who misses the "first day" and all the possibilities it brings.

I guess it is fitting then that my show and tell is all about starting something new. My first picture is of an unfinished frame. It's all about a clean slate right now. I am going to make an inspiration board from scratch. I am really looking forward to this. Something new and fun, I am thinking a Parisian style, but you neve know what direction things will go in. I'm open to suggestions on color schemes! (In other words, what color should I paint it?) My goal is to finish it this week.

My next project is putting together little kits for a new section on my site called It's Time to Get Creative! I thought it would be fun to sell little packages of papers, ephemera, tags, vintage buttons and trims to help spark creativity in others. I also would like to have these up this week.

Speaking of starting something new, I am so excited to share that my first ad is out in the new
Somerset Studio Sept/Oct issue. This was a big leap for me and I hope it is the beginning of wonderful things to come!

So I guess for me, this "year" is about starting on a new path and taking risks. I am looking ahead and I am beginning to feel my goals are real and attainable, and for the first time. . . I'm not scared. . . I'm ready!

Thanks for visiting and have a wonderful week!

Congratulations sweet boy, your a first grader! Carrie he is adorable. I know the exact feeling your described. If your thinking Parisian, you may want to start with a black frame. Enjoy your day.

Hi Carrie,
Your little man is absolutely adorable. I remember leaving my little ones at school on the first day. Now I wonder, wow, whatever happened to all those years. Enjoy them, Carrie. I am anxious to see the little kits that you will be offering....I'll bet they will be irresistable!!

Hi Carrie!

Awww...what an adorable son you have. I know how you feel. I remember the day my kids started school and how sad and worried I was that I could not be with them. My son is in second grade and loves it. I guess because he gets to be around kids his age. Let's enjoy it while we can. Like you said. Next thing you know they will be off to college!LOL I can't wait to see the finished frame. And the kits too!
Have a great week!

Carrie, I just loved reading your show & tell today! You really touched my heart. It's amazing how many emotions parents feel on their child's first day of first grade. I also get the feeling of a new beginning this time of year. Labor Day feels like my New Year's Day since that is when school always started back for me.

Congrats on your ad in Somerset, I can't wait to hear how that drives business for you! And I LOVE LOVE LOVE the kits idea, that is very creative and fun and perfect for your site! I know you will have fun creating your vision board. I also took a large wood poster frame and I used a sampler paint I got at Restoration Hardware in Rose (a velvety dusky pink!) I then covered foam core board with a Laura Ashley rose fabric and criss-crossed shimmery sheer ribbon all around the board. I love it. I'm sure whatever design your creativity leads you to make will be awesome!

Carrie,
Great post and great new ideas. The photo of your son is beautiful and he's adorable. I still remember my oldest son (who's going into 7th) going to Kindergarten. I cried from the minute I got up until he got home that day. It was the hardest thing to let go. I am not ready at all for summer to be over this year but it is new beginnings.

To new beginnings and new creations!

For your vision board I suggest using your own wonderful creativity and do something that is uniquely your own...am I the only one who thinks the Paris thing is overdone?
Probably LOL but then I have never understood it. Give me Spain or Italy any day.

Carrie, your son is beautiful, he looks like such a cherub, no wonder it's hard to let go. I remember each one of mine going to their first day of school, one of those things that's etched in a Mom's mind forever, I guess.
The kit idea is great, I just ventured into that a few weeks ago and sold 2 kits already--go figure!

My son started last week and I was sad! I want him to go to school of course but it really makes you think how time flies and magical those years at home really are. Good luck with your packets, they always do well for me, people always love getting a supply pack!
